It’s Like A Rip in the Space Time Continuum

ben heine: pencil vs. camera

“‘pencil vs. camera’ by ivory coast-born brussels-based photographer ben heine is a series of images that inject hand-drawn pictures within real-life settings to create a composite effect that is often surreal and highly narrative. manipulating the backdrop to host added elements such as real-life tetris blocks, floating speech bubbles, and an alcoholic panda, the photographs are an exercise in manual photoshop, always including heine’s hand which holds up the sketched piece of paper in the foreground.

Just When You Thought MixTapes Were Dead…

Basically, DragonTape is a browser-based visual playlist editor, which enables users to merge video files from different online sources into one. The result is a new gapless video which can be easily shared and embedded as if it was a single file – meanwhile the sources remain in their original location so there are no duplicates only a rearrangement of files. With the quick search function users can find their favourite video within seconds and integrate it into their playlist by simply dragging it on their endless tape.

My only explanation is that I’m single.  See Quincy up close and personal here.

Through The Looking Glass.

Right now, it’s well into the 90′s possibly even the 100′s degree heat in New York City.  I’m walking through the sweltering city streets and I can see the steam steeping from the sidewalks. An egg? Way too cliche.  You can fry a chicken on the sidewalk.  If I were to see a pool outdoors I would think twice because that water would be too hot just sitting outside in the sunlight.  If I were to see a pool inside, possibly, in the air conditioned artfully beautified studio of MoMa’s PS1 city gallery, I would strip down and canon-ball my bare-ass right into that water.  It would probably be mid-air when I would realize a problem.

Dr Dre: Once a Bad Ass; Always a Bad Ass.

I found a clip on YouTube of Dr Dre.  All I can say is- he was a playa way back when.

Have you seen this code?

Isotope: “An exquisite jQuery plugin for magical layouts”.  Go ahead. Do it.  Just try and move that browser window corner.  All hell will break loose- and then it will magically return to sanity.  I was sent this site which presents a glorious way to show elements on a page, navigate a site, as well as confuse a small child.  It self-animates, it doesn’t break the motion law (thou shalt not employ flash past 2006), and it doesn’t make the viewer wait when there are other wicked cool things to see on the internet like this.

Typography Furniture

Written by Tshepo Mokoena via Don’tPanic

We’ve spotted a recent trend cropping up in the world of kooky and ever so slightly self-aware interior design: typography love. Now, as any bog standard hater of Comic Sans will attest to, typefaces and lettering have the potential to be pretty awesome. And once we caught wind of some of these designs, we realised the awesomeness multiplied if you could sit on it. Nothing quite like having letters for dresser drawers, or a sentence imprinted on your butt in a chair you’ve got to scroll down to see. Here are some of our favourite font-based furniture finds.

Pandora Radio’s HTML5 redesign hands-on

Earlier this week, Pandora announced that it would finally be dropping its longtime support for Flash in favor of HTML5. The move is one piece of a big redesign for the site, one which will begin rolling out to Pandora One (the $36 / year premium version) subscribers in pieces, as part of a limited testing period before being made available to the service’s entire massive user base.

The timing could have been more ideal, of course. A day after the announcement, Spotify quickly grabbed the attention of those following the online music industry by formally launching in the US. It’s important to note right off the bat, however, that these two services are not really direct competitors, in spite of how some might spin it. Spotify is an all-you-can eat subscription service, making it more akin to the likes of a Rhapsody and Napster. Pandora, on the other hand, is built largely around passive music discovery. You log-in, you enter an artist, and you let the music come to you. This redesign takes that ease of use to a whole new level. Check out our impressions below.

QR Code on Tombstone Creates Dynamic Memorial

by

When Yoav Medan’s mother Judith passed away in June, the Israel-based medical technology executive couldn’t decide what he wanted to write on her tombstone. After deliberating with his family, Medan decided to turn to technology for the answer and attach a QR code to the grave in Haifa, Israel.

Scanning the QR code leads visitors to a tribute website that Medan has setup and plans to evolve with stories and photos from his mother’s life. “I [didn’t] know what we wanted to write [on the tombstone] and it will never be everything for everyone. By having something that is dynamic and can extend over time, we can capture it,” he told me this week in an interview at TED Global in Edinburgh, Scotland.
